2025 REGISTRATION IS OPEN SOLD OUT!
(Bushwhacker Trail is an oxymoron. Counter intuitive.
Yet, this sign, on the Iron Mountain course near Damascus, VA, at least gives a nod to the Bushwhackers of yore.
Don't worry, we are not running to Damascus.)
Nor are we running to Telluride...
(but wouldn't you like to explore that trail with me?)
The interesting thing about Bushwhacking is the similarity to skiing through untracked (or even slightly tracked) powder in the gladed runs or, more similarly, the wild untamed steep tree areas. I was fortunate to have two trips to CO recently where I found myself enjoying the trees in a meandering way, hunting and pecking for lines to ski down, enjoying the random, wandering ways similar to the TarDevil's many routes. If you enjoy that, please reach out...I'd love to share stories of my other passion with you any time you want to talk about skiing.
E.g: here is "Needles Eye" in Breck last week (Feb 20, 2025):
Needles Eye off E-Chair, Peak Nine, Breckenridge CO....Feb 2025.
A glorious day back in 2023 as we paused for a water refill somewhere in Orange County, NC.
Okay, it was Johnson Mill.
Starting in 2018, we have led annual training-runs from the Old Well at UNC in Chapel Hill to Duke Chapel in Durham utilizing 90% trail or off-road access to enjoy the forests, fields and streams connecting our two towns and campuses.

"I can foresee no material or probable obstruction to our progress, and entertain therefore the most sanguine hopes of complete success. As to myself individually I never enjoyed a more perfect state of good health than I have since we commenced our voyage. My inestimable friend and companions have also enjoyed good health generally. At this moment, every individual of the party are in good health and excellent sperits [sic]; zealously attached to the enterprise, and anxious to proceed; not a whisper of discontent or murmur is to be heard among them; but all in unison act with the most perfect harmony. With such men I have everything to hope and but little to fear"
Meriwether Lewis in a letter to President Thomas Jefferson from Ft. Mandran in present day N. Dakota
